Why Good Plastering Matters

Plastering is the invisible craft that underpins every beautiful interior. You may never think about it once the paint goes on — but a poor plaster job will haunt you: cracks that reappear within months, surfaces that absorb paint unevenly, walls that look rough under raking light. Conversely, a perfectly skimmed wall is a joy to decorate and a lasting testament to quality workmanship.

At Renova Builds, our plasterers are experienced tradespeople who take pride in the finish, not just the speed. We use the correct materials for every substrate — whether that's bonding coat on brick, one-coat plaster on plasterboard, or sand and cement render for exterior walls — and we give every surface the time it needs to cure properly before handover.

Plastering Services We Provide

We cover every form of plastering work across residential properties, new builds, and renovation projects:

  • Skim coating: A finish coat of multi-finish plaster over existing walls or new plasterboard, producing a perfectly smooth, paint-ready surface.
  • Full re-plaster: Complete removal of old, damaged, or blown plaster back to the substrate, followed by a full re-plaster with bonding coat and finish.
  • Sand and cement rendering: Durable external and internal rendering for brick, block, and stone surfaces — ideal for extension walls and garage conversions.
  • Dry lining: Plasterboard fixed to timber or metal studwork to create new partition walls, improve insulation, or line existing masonry walls.
  • Plasterboard fitting: Boarding out ceilings and walls in extensions, loft conversions, and new build rooms prior to skimming.
  • Ceiling repairs: Patching cracks, sagging sections, and water-damaged areas to restore a clean, level ceiling surface.
  • Coving installation: Fitting traditional or contemporary coving profiles at the ceiling-wall junction to add architectural detail.
  • Patching and repairs: Filling holes, cracks, and damaged sections to blend seamlessly with existing plaster.

What Makes a Quality Plaster Finish?

A truly smooth plaster finish is harder to achieve than it looks. The key factors our plasterers control on every job are:

  • Correct surface preparation — cleaning, PVA bonding, and priming the substrate so the plaster adheres without suction issues
  • Consistent mix ratios and working time to maintain workability across the full coat
  • Feathering and ruling off to achieve a flat, level surface without ridges or hollows
  • Timing the trowel passes correctly — working the surface at the right stage of set to achieve a polished finish
  • Protecting fresh plaster from draughts and direct sunlight during the curing period

When Do You Need New Plastering?

Plastering work is needed in more situations than most homeowners realise. Common triggers include:

  • Moving into a new or older property where walls and ceilings are cracked, uneven, or deteriorating
  • After a leak or flood, where plaster has blown or become damp-damaged
  • Following first fix electrics or plumbing work that has chased channels into walls
  • As part of a kitchen or bathroom renovation where tiles have been removed
  • During a loft conversion, extension, or new partition wall installation
  • Before a full repaint where existing walls are too rough or uneven for a quality finish

Our Process

We follow a clear, structured approach on every plastering project to ensure quality from start to finish:

  • Step 1 — Assessment: We visit the property, assess the existing surfaces, identify any damp or structural issues that need addressing first, and confirm the scope of work.
  • Step 2 — Proposal: You receive a clear, itemised quote with a fixed price and a realistic timeline. No hidden extras once work begins.
  • Step 3 — Preparation: We protect floors and adjacent surfaces, remove any loose or damaged plaster, and prepare the substrate correctly before applying any new material.
  • Step 4 — Plastering: Our plasterers apply the correct coats in the correct sequence, giving each one the time it needs before the next is applied.
  • Step 5 — Handover: We leave the plastered surfaces clean, level, and fully cured — ready for your decorator or the next stage of your renovation.

How Long Does Plastering Take to Dry?

Fresh plaster typically takes between 2 and 4 weeks to dry fully before it is ready to paint. The surface will turn from a dark pink to a uniform pale cream colour as it dries. Applying paint or wallpaper too early traps moisture and causes adhesion problems. We always advise clients on correct drying times and can recommend mist coat preparation if required. In urgent situations, accelerated drying with appropriate ventilation can help — but there are no shortcuts that replace proper cure time.

How Much Does Plastering Cost?

Plastering costs depend on the size and condition of the surfaces, the type of work required, and access. As a guide, skimming a single room in the Uxbridge area typically costs between £300 and £700. Full re-plastering of a larger room, or a multi-room project, will naturally cost more. We provide fully itemised quotes so you can see exactly what you are paying for, with no ambiguity.

“Our walls had been badly cracked for years and we'd had a botched job before. Renova's plasterer was meticulous — every room came out perfectly flat. The decorator said it was the best surface he'd ever had to work on.”
